Moonwalkers by Mark Greenwood and Terry Denton

Moonwalkers by Mark Greenwood and Terry Denton

In a sheep paddock near Billy’s house stood one of the largest telescopes on Earth. People called it ‘The Dish’. Astronomers used it to track space missions and learn about faraway galaxies.

Mark Greenwood and Terry Denton have created a fun Australian based story that looks out how two little boys saw the landing of the first man on the moon.

Moonwalkers by Mark Greenwood and Terry Denton is set in the outback NSW town of Parkes, near ‘The Dish’ which played an important role in ensuring the Apollo 11 made it to the moon.

As you read through the story you see the small boys engrossed in anything to do with space. Children can see them build their own Apollo 11, Saturn V, command module and the Lunar module – which is such an important double page spread seeing as many children may think it is the first big rocket shop that is the one that finally lands on the moon.

We then watch them play imagination games which involve space travel, space exploring and space food!

Written from first hand experience from both Terry and Mark, we feel the excitement of the landing and see the event through a child’s eye. It truly must have been an exciting time to be alive!

The story finishes with some great facts about how the astronauts get to the moon step by step, maps of the world and the craters that cover the moon.

Moonwalkers is a great book to share as part of the 50th Anniversary of man landing on the moon. It will allow children to see another point of view from this huge event, learn facts about space travel and of course see how much fun imagination can be.

Thanks so much Vanessa for coming out and sharing your book “The Bee Detectives” with our children 3-5 years old. The experience allowed them to learn so much more about Bees. We have had our native Bees for several years and had beekeepers out before. Your book took an in-depth look into classification, different ways they live, how they collect pollen and make honey.  It created lots of meaningful conversation with the children; your interactive book reading allowed them to share these ideas with each other. The extended activity afterwards of the magnifiers provided by Vanessa was a great extension to the book. The children were so excited to be their very own Bee detectives and really extended their learning.

I was impressed with Vanessa’s professionalism in preparing the teacher notes for my picture book, In the Shadow of an Elephant. Her depth of knowledge on the multitude of topics covered was just incredible! She has compiled a 15-page document that will allow Educators and students an opportunity to explore conversations and discover different layers within the book.
